Start your journey - GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!Aug 01, 2021
Hot chocolate. A blanket that was knitted for you. Your favorite pillow. A comfy sweatshirt. Mashed potatoes.
Those are all things that bring me comfort. When I am comfortable, I am more relaxed. Maybe more lazy at times, which is fine....sometimes!
But in my comfort zone, I am not challenged. I am not learning anything.
I have been in many situations that were new and unfamiliar. When my oldest was young, I had the opportunity to open a school. I had my degree and years experience teacher, but I have never done anything like this before. I had never had employees before. I never had a business where I was making, spending and budgeting money. I never had to get a business license, permits, business insurance, safety building inspections, and so many other things! But I knew it would be an amazing experience. With butterflies in my stomach, I did it. It was a huge learning experience. I had great teachers and help along side me and I learned on the job. When I look back, it was such an incredible experience! I gained so much about running a business, creating curriculum, dealing with people and many more things that make me who I am today.
We all have things and times when comfort is needed and embracing those times is important to you well being. You need to first know when you need comforted. You have had a rough day. You didn't get enough sleep the night before. You worked hard and need a break!
Being in comfort all the time does not help you grow and achieve what you want in life.
You need to STEP OUT of your comfort zone.
When you want to do something that excites you, but you are afraid...
When you know you need to do something to grow, like learn a new skill and you are worried you may fail...
When you think you don't know enough to do a task (and it is safe)...
Will it be easy??? Maybe not. Will it be scary? At first it might. Will you fail? You might, but that is how you learn. No matter what, you won't know unless you try. And who knows, you may reflect back and be thankful you stepped out of your comfort zone and tried something new.
Leaders are not born, they are made. Ask any leader and I bet they will all say they had to step out of their comfort zone to get where they are today. And you are no different. You can be an amazing, compassionate leader but it takes first trying new things (again safe and legal!) by taking a leap and stepping out.
So how do you STEP OUT of your comfort zone?
1. Study the situation that is out of your comfort zone. Something that you have never done before.
2. Total the outcomes. What will you gain by doing this?
3. Evaluate the risks
4. Pick your choice and Plan what is next.
Now it is up to you. Here is your task....
Think about something that you are afraid to do, but you could benefit from. Go through each of the 4 'STEPs" above.
Anytime we do something, we need to REFLECT. Look back at where you started, think about your challenges and celebrations and where you ended.
